What does the Bible actually teach about men and women, gender roles, and leadership in the church?

In this episode of The Postscript Show, Brandon Briscoe sits down with Thomas Harding, pastor of Portland Gospel Church, to examine the debate between egalitarianism and complementarianism. They discuss biblical authority and hermeneutics, whether Galatians 3:28 teaches that gender distinctions have been erased in Christ, and why the doctrine of creation is foundational to understanding God’s design for men and women.

The conversation also examines Jesus’ teaching, Paul’s instructions in Ephesians and 1 Timothy, the qualifications for pastors and deacons, and why Paul’s teaching on gender roles is rooted in creation rather than merely first-century culture.

It is difficult for the pastor to meet the needs of the church. Pastors can be exceptionally busy with the affairs of the church — staff meetings, counseling, setting the budget; making sure the building is safe, clean and ready; and of course the work of prayer, study, and preaching. But has the church created a culture that unnecessarily differentiates between the leadership of the pulpit and the leadership of day-to-day ministry? As Christians, we know it is very easy to be enamored by talent in the church. We are all prone to regard charisma or intellect in our leaders. We tend to be drawn to those who are well-spoken or captivating. This way of judging the aptitude of existing or potential leaders is short-sighted in that we fail to prioritize the more significant criterion of biblical character.
